We actually visited just Cap-Haitien and Port-au-Prince in Haiti. Mostly because of the super expensive accomodations. The first place you see on these pictures was around 60$ for both of us and still basic (no hot water). The next two days we stayed in a usually hourly paid hotel which still cost us 30$ a night. That said in opposition to Port-au-Prince this town is beautiful! and pretty much safe in the day. On the other hand side we came into one dodgy situation at night where somebody followed us and tried to intimidate us. Luckily nothing happend. But from this point we actually avoided to get into similar situations.There is not enough electricity so blackouts are usual and besides a few places alleys are dark at night. Not far from Cap-Haitien are also really nice hotels with private beaches. They charge around 20-25$ a night per room which would be also a nice alternative.
